Presbyterian Anesthesiology Associates provides skilled, experienced, caring doctors for their young patients, from newborns to adolescents. The youngest patients and those with complicated medical problems are cared for by pediatric anesthesiologists. 

Children are not just small adults. Their medical needs are made more complicated by their size, their rapid response to medications, and their smaller organs that may be compromised earlier in disease states. In addition, some children have specific syndromes that are not frequently seen which may need special consideration. Newborns are very immature and respond to the stresses of surgery and the required anesthesia in somewhat different ways than older children and adults. Anesthesia risks are higher for children under the age of 6 months.

Anesthesiologists who focus on children's special anesthesia needs are called pediatric anesthesiologists. They have received extra training in the special needs and challenges of children's anesthesia. They are especially sensitive to the many details of care that can make a big difference in our patients' comfort and health. Several of our staff are pediatricians as well as anesthesiologists. Pediatric anesthesiologists not only medically prepare children for their surgery but also try to reduce the anxiety kids feel as they get ready for the needed surgery. They also help parents understand the issues and processes involved in caring for their children. By enhancing the parents understanding of our concerns, we hope they will approach this very stressful time with more confidence.

We have ten doctors on our pediatric team with special interest and expertise in children. These doctors provide anesthesia in the operating room and at off site locations such as the MRI unit. They also provide special pain treatment alternatives such as regional anesthesia, epidural and caudal pain relief, and nerve blocks when appropriate. They are available at the Presbyterian Hospital Uptown and at the Presbyterian Orthopaedic Hospital.
