I’m Having a Baby

We at Presbyterian Anesthesia Associates would like to provide you with information about who we are and how we can care for you throughout your labor and delivery experience.

Anesthesiologists are pain management and acute care specialists and as such, serve as consultants for the Birthing Care and Special Maternity Care areas. These sites include patients who are pre-delivery, in labor or receiving operative care, and postpartum.

A physician anesthesiologist is present for obstetric anesthesia care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As your consultant, we are actively involved with preanesthetic assessment for maternal health issues, providing recommendations for your obstetrician in caring for your acute care needs while in labor, and managing your pain for labor and surgical delivery by cesarean section when needed. Obstetric anesthesia care is always focused on the needs and safety of both Mom and baby. As acute care physicians trained in urgent and emergent medical management of a wide variety of medical conditions, we stand ready to respond to expected and unexpected situations as necessary.

We work with your obstetric care provider to help you through your birthing process. If you desire pain relief for your labor, we will be glad to evaluate your specific situation along with your obstetrician to determine the safest most effective pain relief method possible. This typically includes regional analgesic techniques such as epidurals and spinals for maximizing your comfort and minimizing risk to you and your baby. If you should require operative delivery by cesarean section, likewise, we provide regional or general anesthesia and assist in managing your postoperative pain.

Above all, we at Presbyterian Anesthesia Associates are focused on your well-being and comfort and we strive to provide the safest care possible for both Mom and baby. Welcome to one of the most exciting experiences of your life!

For further information about anesthesia and your birthing experience, we strongly suggest you read and familiarize yourself with our informative brochure.

We trust this will answer many of your questions. Feel free to ask any other questions when you arrive. Likewise, your obstetric care provider can refer you for consultation with us before delivery, if necessary.
