My Preoperative Visit

Presbyterian Anesthesia Associates is committed to providing an excellent anesthesia experience. Part of this experience will be a complete medical evaluation by one of our physicians. Often this evaluation will be accomplished on the day of your procedure. However, if you are 50 years of age or older or have certain medical conditions, you will be required to schedule a preoperative visit. This visit typically takes place three to seven days before your scheduled procedure.

The purpose of the preoperative visit is to insure that your anesthetic experience is as safe as possible and to avoid any potential delays on the day of your procedure. During this preoperative consultation and evaluation, you can expect the following:

  • Complete review of medical and surgical history
  • Review of any previous experience with anesthesia
  • Review of any family history of adverse anesthetic reactions
  • Review of medication you are currently taking
  • Review of allergies
  • Review of recent medical tests and/or laboratory results
  • Ordering of any additional medical tests or labs

An important aspect of the preoperative visit is an explanation of what type of anesthesia to expect. After taking into account what type of procedure you are scheduled for and your current medical condition, an anesthetic plan will be formulated and discussed with you. You should finish this experience with a full understanding as to what to expect from your anesthesia care team on the day of your procedure.

It is important to know that the anesthesia care team member that you see during the preoperative visit may not be the anesthesiologist who will care for you during your procedure, but you will meet him on the morning of surgery. Be assured that all the information that is gathered during the preoperative visit will be available to him, and that he will be taking excellent care of you.

If you have any questions concerning the preoperative visit, feel free to call our anesthesiology preoperative clinic at the hospital where your procedure is scheduled.
